Four Ways To Avoid Distracted Driving
Mar 17, 2020
What is distracted driving?
According to the AAA-Foundation for Traffic Safety, there are 3 main types of distracted driving; Visual, Manual and Cognitive. A manual distraction is anything that would involve a driver taking his or her hands off of the wheel, the most common being the use of electronic devices. In 2019 distracted driving accidents were the cause of 8.5% of motor vehicle fatalities.
Many states have enacted hands free driving laws: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia (plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands) prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving.
Regardless of your states hands free driving laws, it's always best to institute your own hands free driving rules when you are operating a vehicle. It keeps both you and any passengers you have safer and at less risk of having an automobile accident.
The good news is that there are many hands free products on the market today that will still allow you to communicate via an electronic device while driving, without having to take both hands off of the wheel.

As most people know, distracted driving and taking your hands off of the wheel are a bad combination. It's important to know that the only true way to handle your calls while driving is to not answer at all. There are do no disturb functions on most cell phones that will inform any callers that you are driving and will get back to them when you arrive at your destination. Practicing safe driving is truly to best way to avoid accidents (and spiked auto insurance rates!).
